Late Night Transport One Part of the Plan to Improve Sydney’s Entertainment Precincts
Greens NSW Transport Spokesperson, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, has called on the Government to introduce more late night transport options for Sydney’s entertainment precincts, such as Kings Cross, as one step towards solving Sydney’s alcohol-related violence problem.
“People enjoying our late night entertainment precincts should have access to safe and convenient transport to get them home late at night.
“Too often, people are trapped in the city until trains start running again in the early morning, which leads to safety issues.
“Kings Cross, for example, is perfectly set up to ferry people by train back to Central Station to connect to intercity services and buses.
In many cities around Europe, improvements have been to late night transport, in particular bus services, to protect people and to prevent redistribution of violence to neighbouring areas.
“Cities all around the world recognise that people do not stop moving around at midnight, especially on Friday and Saturday nights.
“Of course, transport alone cannot solve many of the long running problems related to alcohol related violence. But when provided alongside other measures such as holding licensees accountable for the service of alcohol in their venues, including significant penalties for licensing breaches, we will begin to see a more vibrant and safe nightlife in Sydney”, she concluded.
